Nolan, Sirota Shine in CHL All-Star Game
Goaltender makes 17 saves in the second period, forward notches assist
Rapid City, SD - The Missouri Mavericks were represented well in the 2011 Central Hockey League All Star Game Wednesday night at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Arena in Rapid City, South Dakota as the CHL All Stars took down the defending CHL champions, the Rapid City Rush, 11-6. The Mavericks were represented by goaltender Robby Nolan and forward Nick Sirota.
Joined by Mavs' Head Coach Scott Hillman, Sirota and Nolan both made their marks on this game. With Nolan sitting out the first period, Sirota shined in the spotlight, assisting on Wichita Thunder forward Matt Robinson's hat trick goal in the first period. Robinson's three goals were scored in less than four minutes. The CHL All Stars carried a 4-2 lead into the locker room after the first period came to a close. Colorado Eagles' goaltender Kyle Jones stopped 10 of 12 Rapid City shots in the period. Rapid City's Danny Bottochico was peppered in the opening period, managing just eight saves on 12 shots from the All Stars.
Robby Nolan entered the game at the start of the second period, and it got ugly fast. After letting in three goals on three shots in the first minute of the period, Nolan was outstanding, stopping every Rapid City shot in the period. When the dust settled, Nolan had stopped 17 consecutive shots. Nolan held the Rush scoreless for 19 minutes as the All Stars regained the lead and headed into the second intermission with a 7-5 lead.
The central storyline of the game got a bit interesting as the CHL All Stars recorded their second hat trick of the game. This time from Evansville Ice Men forward Brian Bicek. The All Stars were able to hold off the Rush for the final 20 minutes of the game and skated away with a 11-6 victory.
Nick Sirota ended the night with one assist, one shot on goal and a -2 plus/minus rating. Nolan turned in 17 saves on 20 shots.
