Eagles Take Down Mavericks in Game Two, 5-1
Haddon’s hat-trick lifts Colorado to 2-0 series lead
LOVELAND, Colorado – The Missouri Mavericks were defeated by the Colorado Eagles Saturday night, 5-1, at Budweiser Events Center. Eagles’ forward Steve Haddon recorded a natural hat-trick and goaltender Andrew Penner stopped 25 of 36 shots as the Eagles took a 2-0 series lead in the Turner Conference Semifinals. The best-of-five series now shifts to Independence for Game Three on Tuesday at Independence Events Center, and if necessary, Game Four on Thursday. Tickets are available for both games at www.Ticketmaster.com.
The teams were evenly matched through the majority of the first 20 minutes of play. Colorado broke the scoreless tie on a power play with just 29 seconds remaining in the first period. Steve Haddon lifted a rebound over the glove of Mavericks’ goaltender Robby Nolan to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead just before intermission. He was assisted by Aaron Schneekloth and Daymen Rycroft. Colorado held the edge in shots at 8-6 after the first period, and the Eagles converted on one of two power plays.
The Mavericks had a great chance to tie the game the near the midway point of the second period when they were awarded a five-on-three power play for 1:06. The Mavericks had multiple chances on Eagles’ goaltender Andrew Penner, but they were unable to score the equalizer. After the power play, the Eagles and Haddon took the momentum and Haddon completed his natural hat-trick.
First, at the 11:36 mark, Haddon took a pass from Adam Hogg and beat Nolan to make it 2-0. He then completed the hat-trick on a partial breakaway on the power play on passes from Daymen Rycroft and goaltender Penner. Colorado made it 4-0 when Riley Nelson got behind the Mavericks defense and snuck the puck under the padding of Nolan at the 16:43 mark. Mavericks’ goaltender Gerry Festa entered the game after the Eagles fourth goal. Festa stopped the remaining Eagles’ shots and the Mavericks trailed 4-0 through two periods.
Colorado scored their third power play goal of the game just 2:25 into the third period when Kevin Ulanski buried a shot from the doorstep. At the 8:36 mark, Mavericks’ defenseman Cole Ruwe was hit in a defenseless position and injured. Adam Chorneyko served a five-minute major and received a game misconduct for the hit. Missouri was unable to score on the five-minute power play, but the Mavericks finally converted with 1:48 remaining in the game. Ryan Jardine ended Penner’s bid for a shutout when he scored his third goal of the post-season on a pass from Shawn Fensel.
The Mavericks finished 0-for-5 on the power play while Colorado was 3-for-8. Missouri now faces a must-win situation in Game 3 at Independence Events Center. Missouri must win the next three games in the series to stave off elimination.
